Working Principle, Process and Grinding Wheels of Special-shaped Glass Edging Machine

1. Working Principle

The special-shaped glass edging machine operates based on the mechanical friction grinding principle. Driven by a motor, the grinding wheel rotates at a high speed. The special-contour glass is firmly fixed on the worktable. The relative motion between the high-speed rotating grinding wheel and the glass edge removes excess materials from the glass edge, realizing edging, rounding and polishing of irregular glass edges. Some models are equipped with template tracking systems or CNC numerical control systems, which can automatically track glass contours and complete the processing of complex-shaped edges efficiently and accurately.

2. Working Process

Step 1: Preparatory Work

Clean the surface of the glass to remove dust and impurities. Inspect the integrity and wear condition of the grinding wheels, and adjust the machine’s rotating speed, processing pressure and worktable position to ensure the equipment is in normal working condition.

Step 2: Workpiece Fixing

Place the glass on the vacuum suction table or special fixing device and clamp it stably to avoid displacement or vibration during processing. For template-type edging machines, install the matched template according to the actual shape of the glass workpiece.

Step 3: Rough Grinding

The rough grinding diamond wheel contacts the glass edge to quickly remove raw edge burrs and redundant materials, forming the basic contour of the glass edge. Cooling water is continuously supplied throughout the process to cool the grinding area and wash away glass powder residues, preventing high-temperature damage to the glass and grinding wheel.

Step 4: Fine Grinding

Replace with a fine grinding wheel to further process the glass edge. This step optimizes the surface roughness of the edge, corrects contour deviations generated during rough grinding, and improves the dimensional accuracy and flatness of the edge.

Step 5: Polishing

Use a professional polishing wheel for final finishing treatment. The edge surface is processed to be smooth, scratch-free and glossy, meeting the finished product’s appearance and quality standards.

Step 6: Finishing and Inspection

Stop the machine and take out the processed glass. Clean the equipment and residual glass powder on the worktable, and inspect the edge processing quality, shape accuracy and surface finish of the finished glass.

3. Applicable Grinding Wheels

3.1 Rough Grinding Diamond Wheel

It is used for primary rough grinding procedures. With strong cutting capacity, it can quickly remove glass raw edges, burrs and excess materials, and efficiently shape the basic outline of special-shaped glass edges. It is the core grinding tool for preliminary processing.

3.2 Fine Grinding Diamond Wheel

Applied to the intermediate finishing process. It effectively reduces the surface roughness of the glass edge, fixes contour errors after rough grinding, and lays a flat and uniform foundation for subsequent polishing procedures.

3.3 Resin / Cerium Oxide Polishing Wheel

Dedicated to the final polishing process. It can eliminate tiny scratches on the glass edge, make the edge surface smooth and transparent, and achieve a high-gloss mirror effect, which determines the final appearance quality of the glass edge.

3.4 Diamond Forming Wheel

It is specially designed for special-shaped edge forming processing, suitable for manufacturing rounded edges, beveled edges and other special edge shapes. It features high forming accuracy and good adaptability for complex irregular glass contour processing.
